Detailed Safari Itinerary
DAY 1: KIGALI TO AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK
Morning Departure: Pick up from Kigali International Airport or your Kigali hotel. Briefing about the safari and Akagera National Park.
Scenic Drive: Journey east through Rwanda's beautiful countryside with views of tea plantations and rural villages.
Akagera Park Entrance: Arrive at Akagera National Park's main entrance, complete registration formalities.
Game Drive En Route to Lodge: Your first game drive begins immediately as you travel to your lodge inside the park.
Lunch at Lodge: Check in and enjoy lunch with views of the park landscape.
Afternoon Game Drive: Head out for your first proper game drive in the northern plains area, looking for elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and predators.

DAY 2: FULL DAY AKAGERA EXPLORATION

Breakfast in the Bush: Enjoy a picnic breakfast at a scenic spot within the park.
Northern Circuit Exploration: Explore the northern sector of the park known for large herds of buffalo, elephants, and the rare roan antelope.

Akagera's Key Wildlife Species

Akagera's Conservation Story
Historical Decline: In the 1990s, Akagera lost over 90% of its large mammals due to poaching and human encroachment following the Rwandan genocide. Lions were completely wiped out.
Partnership with African Parks: In 2010, the Rwandan government partnered with African Parks to rehabilitate Akagera. This marked the beginning of one of Africa's most successful conservation turnarounds.
Reintroductions: Lions were reintroduced in 2015 (7 from South Africa), followed by black rhinos in 2017 (18 from South Africa) and white rhinos in 2021 (30 from South Africa).
