Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1: ARRIVAL AND TRANSFER TO BWINDI

Arrival & Welcome: Arrive at Entebbe International Airport where you'll be met by our representative.

Scenic Drive to Bwindi: Embark on a picturesque drive through the rolling hills of southwestern Uganda. Stop at the Equator for photos and lunch en route.

Arrival at Lodge: Arrive at your comfortable lodge near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the evening.

Evening Briefing: Receive a comprehensive briefing about gorilla habituation etiquette, safety, and what to expect.

Accommodation: Overnight at luxury lodge with dinner included.

DAY 2: GORILLA HABITUATION EXPERIENCE

Early Morning Preparation: Wake up early for breakfast and pack your daypack with essentials.

Park Headquarters: Transfer to the park headquarters for registration and briefing by park officials and researchers.

Habituation Trek: Begin your trek into the forest with experienced trackers and researchers. The trek duration varies (2-6 hours) depending on gorilla movements.

Gorilla Encounter: Once the gorilla family is located, spend up to 4 hours observing their natural behaviors - feeding, playing, nesting, and social interactions.

Research Participation: Assist researchers with data collection and learn about ongoing conservation efforts.

Return to Lodge: Return to your lodge in the afternoon for relaxation and dinner.

DAY 3: BATWA CULTURAL EXPERIENCE OR NATURE WALK

Morning Options: Choose between a cultural experience or nature walk:

Option A - Batwa Cultural Experience: Visit the indigenous Batwa pygmy community. Learn about their traditional forest lifestyle, hunting techniques, and cultural heritage. Participate in traditional dances and storytelling.

Option B - Forest Nature Walk: Explore different sectors of Bwindi Forest with a guide. Look for forest elephants, monkeys, and abundant birdlife including 23 endemic Albertine Rift species.

Afternoon: Relax at the lodge, visit a local community project, or enjoy a massage at the lodge spa.

Farewell Dinner: Enjoy a special farewell dinner with your guide and share experiences.

DAY 4: RETURN TO ENTEBBE AND DEPARTURE

Morning Departure: After breakfast, begin your journey back to Entebbe.

What is Gorilla Habituation?

Gorilla habituation is the process of gradually accustoming wild gorillas to human presence. This process takes 2-3 years and involves researchers and trackers spending time with specific gorilla families daily. Unlike regular trekking (limited to 1 hour), habituation experiences allow 4 hours with the gorillas, providing a more intimate and educational encounter.

Essential Information & Tips

  • Permits: Gorilla habituation permits are limited to 4 per day per family and must be booked well in advance (6-12 months recommended).
  • Fitness Level: Moderate fitness required. Trekking can be strenuous with steep terrain and high altitude (1,160-2,607m).
  • Packing Essentials: Waterproof hiking boots, rain jacket, gardening gloves, long pants, insect repellent, camera with extra batteries.
  • Health Requirements: Yellow fever vaccination certificate required. Consider malaria prophylaxis.
  • Age Limit: Minimum age is 15 years for habituation experience.
  • Best Time to Visit: June-August and December-February (drier seasons offer easier trekking conditions).
