Detailed Safari Itinerary
DAY 1: TRANSFER FROM KIGALI TO VIRUNGA NATIONAL PARK
Morning Departure: Pick up from your Kigali hotel or Kigali International Airport. Meet your guide who will brief you about the safari.
Scenic Drive to Border: Enjoy a picturesque 2-3 hour drive through Rwanda's beautiful landscape to the Rwanda-DRC border at Gisenyi/Goma.
Border Crossing: Complete border formalities with assistance from your guide (ensure you have DRC visa if required).
Transfer to Lodge: Drive to your accommodation near Virunga National Park headquarters in Bukima or Mikeno.
Evening Briefing: Receive a comprehensive briefing about gorilla trekking etiquette, safety procedures, and what to expect.
Accommodation: Overnight at lodge with dinner included.

DAY 2: GORILLA TREKKING IN VIRUNGA NATIONAL PARK
Early Morning Preparation: Wake up early for breakfast and pack your daypack with essentials (water, snacks, rain jacket, camera).
Park Headquarters: Transfer to the park headquarters for registration and briefing by park officials. You'll be assigned to a gorilla family and meet your ranger guides.
Gorilla Trekking: Begin your trek into the forest. The duration varies (1-4 hours) depending on the location of the gorilla family. The terrain can be steep and challenging at times.
Gorilla Encounter: Once the gorilla family is located, you'll spend one magical hour observing their natural behaviors - feeding, playing, social interactions, and possibly seeing silverbacks.
Return to Lodge: Trek back to the starting point and return to your lodge. Celebrate your gorilla encounter with fellow trekkers.
Optional Activities: In the afternoon, you can relax at the lodge or take a guided nature walk in the surrounding area.
Accommodation: Overnight at lodge with all meals included.

DAY 3: RETURN TO KIGALI AND DEPARTURE
Morning Departure: After breakfast, begin your journey back to Rwanda.
Border Crossing: Complete exit formalities from DRC and entry back into Rwanda.
Scenic Return Drive: Drive back through Rwanda's beautiful countryside to Kigali.
Kigali City Tour (Optional): Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time for a brief Kigali city tour including:
- Visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial (highly recommended)

- Lunch at a local restaurant

About Virunga National Park
Virunga National Park, established in 1925, is Africa's oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Covering 7,800 square kilometers, it's home to an incredible diversity of habitats including active volcanoes, rainforests, savannas, and lakes. The park is most famous for its mountain gorillas but also hosts chimpanzees, okapis, forest elephants, and over 700 bird species. Virunga's conservation efforts have been instrumental in protecting mountain gorillas from extinction.
