About the National Parks & Primates

Volcanoes National Park: Located in northwestern Rwanda, this park protects the Rwandan portion of the Virunga Mountains, home to approximately one-third of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. The park covers 160 km² of montane rainforest and bamboo forest, with altitudes ranging from 2,400 to 4,507 meters. In addition to gorillas, it hosts golden monkeys, forest elephants, buffalo, and numerous bird species.

Nyungwe Forest National Park: One of Africa's oldest and best-preserved rainforests, covering 1,019 km² in southwestern Rwanda. The forest is estimated to be over 10,000 years old and hosts incredible biodiversity: 13 primate species (including chimpanzees and colobus monkeys), 300+ bird species, 1,000+ plant species, and 120+ butterfly species. Nyungwe is a critical water catchment area feeding both the Nile and Congo river systems.

Mountain Gorillas: Endangered primates with only about 1,000 individuals remaining in the wild. They live in stable family groups led by a dominant silverback. Gorilla tourism has been crucial to their conservation, providing funding for protection and involving local communities.

Chimpanzees: Our closest living relatives, sharing about 98% of our DNA. They are highly intelligent, using tools and exhibiting complex social behaviors. Nyungwe's chimpanzees are part of the eastern chimpanzee subspecies.

Conservation Success: Both parks represent conservation success stories. Mountain gorilla numbers have increased from around 250 in the 1980s to over 1,000 today. Nyungwe's protection has preserved one of Africa's most important biodiversity hotspots.

Primate Species You May Encounter

Volcanoes National Park:

  • Mountain Gorillas: Approximately 10 habituated family groups available for tracking
  • Golden Monkeys: Endangered primates unique to the Virunga region with striking golden-orange fur
  • Other primates: Occasional sightings of blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus

Nyungwe Forest National Park:

  • Chimpanzees: Several habituated communities available for tracking
