About Mountain Gorillas
Conservation Success: Mountain gorillas are the only great ape species whose numbers are increasing, thanks to intensive conservation efforts. From approximately 680 individuals in 2008 to over 1,000 today, this represents a remarkable conservation success story.
Social Structure: Gorillas live in stable family groups led by a dominant silverback male. Groups typically include several females, their offspring, and sometimes subordinate males. The silverback makes all decisions including when to wake, eat, and sleep.
Behavior: Gorillas are generally gentle and shy. They spend their days foraging for vegetation (eating up to 40 pounds daily), resting, and socializing through grooming and play.
Threats: Habitat loss, poaching, diseases transmitted from humans, and political instability in their range countries remain significant threats.
About Golden Monkeys
Unique Species: Golden monkeys are a subspecies of the blue monkey, distinguished by their striking golden-orange fur on their backs and flanks. They are endemic to the Albertine Rift region of East Africa.
Behavior: These highly social primates live in large groups of up to 80 individuals. They are incredibly active and playful, frequently leaping through bamboo forests and engaging in social grooming.
Diet: Golden monkeys are primarily folivorous (leaf-eating) but also consume fruits, flowers, and occasionally insects. Their specialized diet of bamboo shoots makes them particularly vulnerable to habitat changes.
Habitat: They prefer bamboo forests at altitudes between 2,300-4,300 meters (7,500-14,000 feet) in the Virunga volcanic mountains.
