Essential Kilimanjaro Climbing Tips

Physical Preparation

Start Early: Begin training 3-6 months before climb. Cardio Focus: Running, hiking, stair climbing with weighted pack. Strength Training: Leg strength crucial - squats, lunges, step-ups. Altitude Training: If possible, train at altitude or use altitude simulation. Practice Hikes: Do back-to-back hiking days with full pack.

Altitude Sickness Prevention

Diamox: Consider acetazolamide (Diamox) - consult doctor. Hydration: Drink 4-5 liters of water daily. Pole Pole: Go slowly - "pole pole" is the Kilimanjaro mantra. Listen to Body: Report any symptoms to guide immediately. Acclimatization: 8-day route provides best acclimatization profile.

Summit Night Strategy

Layering: Multiple thin layers rather than few thick ones. Hand Warmers: Chemical hand warmers in gloves and boots. Hydration: Keep water bladder hose insulated to prevent freezing. Snacks: Easy-to-eat high-energy snacks in accessible pockets. Mental Preparation: Summit night is 90% mental - stay positive.

Health & Safety

Travel Insurance: Must include high-altitude climbing and evacuation. Vaccinations: Yellow fever required, hepatitis A&B, typhoid recommended. Dental Check: Visit dentist before climb - altitude can cause tooth pain. Foot Care: Treat blisters immediately, keep feet dry, quality socks. Sun Protection: High UV at altitude - strong sunscreen, lip balm.

Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro

Dry Seasons (Best): January-March & June-October. January-February: Clear skies, colder, less crowded. June-October: Cooler temperatures, busiest period. Shoulder Seasons: April-May & November - possible rain, fewer climbers. Full Moon: Many climbers time summit for full moon for better visibility.
