About Nyungwe's Chimpanzees

Population: Nyungwe Forest is home to approximately 500 chimpanzees living in several communities. The chimpanzees here are part of the eastern chimpanzee subspecies (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii).

Behavior: Chimpanzees are highly intelligent and social primates. They use tools (like sticks to extract termites), have complex social structures, and exhibit behaviors remarkably similar to humans including grooming, playing, and forming alliances.

Daily Life: Chimpanzees spend their days traveling through the forest in search of food (mainly fruits, but also leaves, insects, and occasionally small mammals), socializing, and resting in nests they build each night.

Research: Nyungwe's chimpanzees have been studied by researchers for decades, contributing to our understanding of primate behavior and evolution.

Conservation Status: Endangered. Threats include habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and diseases transmitted from humans.

Birding in Nyungwe Forest

Birding Paradise: Nyungwe is one of Africa's most important birding destinations with over 300 species recorded, including 29 species that are endemic to the Albertine Rift region.

Key Species to Look For:

  • Great Blue Turaco: Large, spectacular bird often seen in forest clearings
  • Ruwenzori Turaco: Beautiful endemic with red and green plumage
  • Red-collared Babbler: Nyungwe endemic, often found in forest undergrowth
  • Strange Weaver: Albertine Rift endemic with unique nest-building behavior
  • Handsome Francolin: Shy forest bird with distinctive calls
  • African Green Broadbill: Rare and highly sought-after by birders
  • Regal Sunbird: Beautiful sunbird endemic to Albertine Rift forests
  • Various Sunbirds: Multiple species including bronze, blue-headed, and purple-breasted

Best Birding Spots: Canopy walkway (for canopy species), forest trails, marsh edges, and lodge gardens.

Birding Tips: Early morning is best for bird activity. Bring binoculars and a field guide. Consider hiring a specialist bird guide for serious birding.

The Nyungwe Canopy Walkway

Unique Experience: Nyungwe features East Africa's only canopy walkway, offering a completely different perspective of the rainforest ecosystem.

Structure: The walkway consists of a series of suspension bridges and platforms 50 meters (160 feet) above the forest floor, spanning 160 meters (525 feet) across a steep valley.

What You'll See: From the canopy, you can observe birds, monkeys, and other wildlife that rarely descend to the forest floor. The views across the forest canopy are spectacular.

Safety: The walkway is engineered to international safety standards with regular inspections and maintenance.

Accessibility: Requires moderate fitness as there are stairs to climb to reach the walkway. Not recommended for those with severe vertigo or mobility issues.

Photography: Excellent opportunities for unique forest photography, though tripods may be challenging on the moving walkway.

Essential Nyungwe Trekking Tips

  • Fitness Preparation: Nyungwe's trails are steep and can be muddy. Regular walking/hiking preparation is recommended.
  • Altitude Awareness: The forest ranges from 1,600-2,950m (5,200-9,700ft). Take it easy, stay hydrated, and inform your guide if you feel altitude effects.
  • Packing Essentials: Waterproof hiking boots, rain jacket, long pants, long-sleeved shirt, daypack, water, snacks, camera (no flash), binoculars.
  • Health Requirements: Chimpanzees are susceptible to human diseases. Do not trek if you're sick. Minimum age is 15 years for chimpanzee trekking.
  • Photography: Bring a camera with good zoom (no flash). The forest is often dim, so consider a camera that performs well in low light.
  • Porter Hire: Available and recommended for those who want assistance with their daypack ($10-15).
  • Respect Guidelines: Maintain 10m distance from chimpanzees, speak softly, no eating near primates, follow guide's instructions at all times.
  • Weather Preparation: Nyungwe is often misty and rainy. Waterproof everything and bring extra layers for changing conditions.
