About Nyungwe's Chimpanzees
Population: Nyungwe Forest is home to approximately 500 chimpanzees living in several communities. The chimpanzees here are part of the eastern chimpanzee subspecies (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii).
Behavior: Chimpanzees are highly intelligent and social primates. They use tools (like sticks to extract termites), have complex social structures, and exhibit behaviors remarkably similar to humans including grooming, playing, and forming alliances.
Daily Life: Chimpanzees spend their days traveling through the forest in search of food (mainly fruits, but also leaves, insects, and occasionally small mammals), socializing, and resting in nests they build each night.

The Nyungwe Canopy Walkway

Structure: The walkway consists of a series of suspension bridges and platforms 50 meters (160 feet) above the forest floor, spanning 160 meters (525 feet) across a steep valley.
What You'll See: From the canopy, you can observe birds, monkeys, and other wildlife that rarely descend to the forest floor. The views across the forest canopy are spectacular.
Safety: The walkway is engineered to international safety standards with regular inspections and maintenance.
Accessibility: Requires moderate fitness as there are stairs to climb to reach the walkway. Not recommended for those with severe vertigo or mobility issues.
Photography: Excellent opportunities for unique forest photography, though tripods may be challenging on the moving walkway.
Essential Nyungwe Trekking Tips
- Fitness Preparation: Nyungwe's trails are steep and can be muddy. Regular walking/hiking preparation is recommended.
