Detailed Itinerary
DAY 1: ARRIVAL AND TRANSFER TO RWENZORI
Arrival in Uganda: Arrive at Entebbe International Airport and transfer to your accommodation in Kampala.
Briefing and Equipment Check: Evening briefing about the hike, equipment check, and meet your guide and porters.
Accommodation: Overnight at hotel in Kampala with dinner included.
DAY 2: TRANSFER TO KASESE AND START TREK
Travel to Kasese: Morning transfer to Kasese town at the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains (approximately 5-6 hours drive).
Start Trekking: Begin your hike from Nyakalengija trailhead (1,600m) to Nyabitaba Hut (2,651m). Trek through tropical forest with chances of seeing primates and birds.
Accommodation: Overnight at Nyabitaba Hut with meals included.
DAY 3: TREK TO JOHN MATTE HUT
Morning Trek: Continue trekking from Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut (3,414m). Cross the Kurt Shafer Bridge and hike through bamboo and montane forest.
Scenic Views: Enjoy views of Mount Baker and the surrounding peaks.
Accommodation: Overnight at John Matte Hut with meals included.
DAY 4: TREK TO BUJUKU HUT
Ascend to Bujuku Hut: Trek from John Matte Hut to Bujuku Hut (3,962m). Pass through the Bigo Bog and enjoy views of Lake Bujuku.
Alpine Zone: Enter the alpine zone with unique vegetation including giant lobelias and groundsels.
Lake Bujuku: Arrive at Bujuku Hut located near the beautiful Lake Bujuku with stunning mountain reflections.
Accommodation: Overnight at Bujuku Hut with meals included.
DAY 5: DESCENT TO NYABITABA HUT
Morning at Bujuku: Enjoy the morning scenery at Lake Bujuku before beginning your descent.
Return Trek: Trek back from Bujuku Hut to Nyabitaba Hut, retracing your steps through the different vegetation zones.
Accommodation: Overnight at Nyabitaba Hut with meals included.
DAY 6: FINAL DESCENT AND DEPARTURE
Final Descent: Trek from Nyabitaba Hut back to Nyakalengija trailhead.
Certificate Ceremony: Receive your Rwenzori hiking certificate at the park headquarters.
Return to Kampala: Travel back to Kampala with lunch en route.
Departure: Drop-off at your hotel or Entebbe Airport for your onward travel.
Tips & Recommendations
- Fitness Preparation: This trek requires good physical fitness. Prepare with regular cardio exercise and hiking practice before your trip.
- Packing Essentials: Waterproof hiking boots, warm clothing (layers), waterproof jacket and pants, gloves, hat, sleeping bag, headlamp.
- Altitude Awareness: Be aware of altitude sickness symptoms. The trek allows for proper acclimatization, but listen to your body and inform your guide of any issues.
